Dennis Houghton seeks to combine the best qualities of traditional brass craftsmanship with the advantages of new technology. His technical background in brass instrument customization and restoration includes thousands of repairs over the past 30 years. Dennis’ outstanding service and reputation have yielded clients from across the United States and abroad.
Mr. Houghton holds a Bachelor of Music degree in horn performance (1979) from California State University at Long Beach, where he studied with Fred Fox and James Decker. In 1982-83, he pursued graduate work as a Rotary International Scholar at the Northwest German Academy of Music with Michael Hoeltzel. Upon moving to Texas in 1984, Mr. Houghton continued his studies at the University of North Texas with Dr. Bill Scharnberg.
From 1984 until 2004, Dennis worked as a private horn instructor in many of the top band programs in the DFW area. He taught an average of 60 students per week while doing brass repair during evenings and weekends.
Many of Mr. Houghton’s students achieved top All-State honors in TMEA competition, and several have gone on to successful musical careers of their own. Dennis has played with various orchestras in California, Colombia, Germany, and Texas. He and his wife, Karen, are current members of the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra horn section.
Dennis is an owner of Houghton Horns, and the head craftsman.
