Conn 8D Abilene with Elkhart Parts – Serial #: GB540028
Double Horn F/Bb
Fixed Bell Case Included
This very unique Conn 8D was produced in 1972-73. According to the Conn Serial Number database, the “GB” prefix does not exist, which could possibly mean this horn was produced as a pre-production example for the Abilene factory when it moved from Elkhart. A full valve rebuild was performed by Houghton Horns in 2017.
“It is made of Elkhart parts with some Abilene parts mixed in. The stop arms and stop plates are cast, the pinky hook and pull rings on 2nd are different, and the serial number is on the bell tail to first branch ferrell which I have never seen before. The horn is assembled to the same quality level you would expect of Elkhart produced horns. (unlike the “R” series horns) The horn plays just like you would expect an Elkhart produced horn to, with a nice free blowing rich sound. The bell does not say Elkhart but, as can be seen in the photos, has the seam high up meaning it was produced there. The valves are tapered Elkhart parts and have just been rebuilt to better than new condition. The valve section is another unique part in that the bearings are nickel plated brass. Minor dents have been removed, the horn fully cleaned, and is ready to be played. There is some peeling lacquer on the bell and signs of dent work in the tail section but the rest of the lacquer is in great shape.” – Christopher Reddick, Repair Manager
