This professional cornet is in great shape! It has been preserved in storage for the majority of its life, and with 95% or more silver plating remaining. The valve compression tested within standard used range and the leadpipe has no signs of redrot, better than most examples this age. A great example of Bach instruments made in the Early Elkhart era, whose modern counterparts are the 190 series. This example was crafted in 1976, and features their most popular 37 bell model, desirable two-piece valveblock, and nickel outer slides. Includes the original Bach Warranty Card, Bach 7C Mouthpiece, and Bach Case with characteristic blue interior. Also includes a vintage Tom Crown mute.

It has been ultrasonically cleaned and maintained by our world-class repair shop, and is ready for many more years of use!

This "Early Elkhart" era Bach Stradivarius cornet features a two piece valve casing with nickel upper balusters, brass valve guides, and nickel outer slides. This is closer to the Mt Vernon craftsmen, tooling, and hand-hammered bell forming that has been lost to time. These additional handmade parts and fitment results in a richer sound and quicker response. This all changed after the mid 1970s, and different from the modern 180 series, one reason why older Bach instruments often have a different and more desirable sound to them.

The modern Bach 190 series trumpets have reintroduced the specifications and craftsmanship found on instruments of this era. With some of their best features, and a desirable vintage, this cornet is a bargain at a quarter of the new price.

What is a cornet?

Cornets and Trumpets are two peas in the same pod: both play in the key of Bb and share the same valves and valve slides. There are two main differences, which result in cornets having a different look than the trumpet.

The first is the leadpipe, which wraps twice around the cornet, while the trumpet wraps only once. This allows the cornet's leadpipe to gradually grow in size, and have a shorter bell. This is a conical taper through the instrument, and also benefits from better center of gravity, and generally requires less air to play. On the trumpet, the leadpipe is shorter and straighter, but the bell is longer. This is a cylindrical taper, with less change in tubing through the instrument, and it requires more air to play and balance to hold correctly. This makes cornets an excellent choice for musicians who value ergonomics and efficiency.

The second difference is the bell, which is a larger taper on the cornet, and a tighter taper on the trumpet. This produces a warmer or rounded sound, versus and brighter and harsher sound. However, as trumpets from custom makers have grown in bell size and tapers (and cost), they near closer and closer to the cornet sound and other characteristics. This can also be seen with main tuning slides, now in different shapes and expanding tapers or dual bores. This makes cornets an excellent choice for professional musicians who would like a warmer sound without breaking the bank.
