Catherine Likhuta's Vivid Dreams (2018) is a three-movement work for low horn and piano, commissioned by Denise Tryon. Lasting approximately 13 minutes, it places the horn in the role of storyteller, moving through contrasting imaginary scenes rather than treating the low register solely as an orchestral supporting voice.

Cradle in the Forest turns a lullaby into something unsettling; Octopus centers on a recurring eight-note figure; and Urban Secrets evokes a bustling city interrupted by a glimpse of a waltz inside a dance studio. The contrasting scenes invite careful attention to pacing, tone color, and changes of character. For a recital featuring contemporary low-horn repertoire, this cycle offers a substantial narrative arc with piano accompaniment. This is the original horn-and-piano work, not the later concerto version with wind ensemble.

The video below features Urban Secrets, the final movement of the cycle.
