Now here's the scoop on Schilke!

The Legacy of Schilke

Schilke Music Products was founded in 1956 by Renold O. Schilke, master craftsman and longtime member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure with the CSO, Schilke applied his deep understanding of performance demands to the design of instruments and mouthpieces that would ultimately reshape the brass world.

Over more than four decades, Renold O. Schilke developed instruments celebrated for their precision, intonation, and unmistakable brilliance of sound. Today, Schilke trumpets are often referred to as the “jewel of the industry,” prized for their beauty, consistency, and refined playability. Professional musicians worldwide continue to rely on Schilke for instruments that respond effortlessly, slot securely, and deliver clarity at the highest level.

Handmade Excellence in an American Workshop

Every Schilke instrument is handcrafted in Chicago, Illinois, where a dedicated team of skilled artisans continues the tradition Renold began nearly 70 years ago. Each trumpet and mouthpiece is the product of meticulous handwork, thoughtful design, and rigorous quality control.

Schilke blends time-honored craftsmanship with modern precision, resulting in instruments that offer exceptional intonation, even response, and remarkable consistency from horn to horn. This commitment to detail ensures that when you pick up a Schilke, you experience the same performance standard trusted by generations of professionals.

Schilke P5-4 Bb/A Piccolo Trumpet – The Industry Standard

Now in stock at Houghton Horns, the Schilke P5-4 Bb/A Piccolo Trumpet remains the definitive reference standard worldwide. Originally designed in the early 1970s, the P5-4 set the benchmark for piccolo trumpet design, construction, and sound, and it continues to lead the field today.

Renowned for its exceptional intonation and remarkably even response throughout the range, the P5-4 offers superior tonal clarity with a focused, singing brilliance. Whether performing demanding orchestral excerpts or solo literature, players benefit from secure slotting, clean articulation, and a centered sound that projects with authority.

A recent enhancement to this classic model includes two interchangeable leadpipes for Bb and A, providing improved intonation security, more defined slotting, and greater flexibility in tonal color compared to the historical single-leadpipe configuration.

Schilke P5-4 models from Houghton Horns include these specifications:

  • One-piece “Beryllium” bell
  • #8 bell taper
  • Unsoldered bead
  • .450″ medium bore
  • Adjustable leadpipe
  • Lightweight design
  • Silver plated
  • Made in USA
  • Includes Bam double case and Schilke mouthpiece
  • Interchangeable leadpipes for Bb and A

For over 65 years, Schilke piccolo trumpets have been trusted by the world’s great musicians—and the P5-4 remains the gold standard.

Schilke B1 Bb Trumpet – Natural Brilliance & Versatility

Also in stock at Houghton Horns, the Schilke B1 Bb Trumpet stands as one of the most iconic models in the Schilke lineup. The preferred Bb trumpet of Renold O. Schilke himself, the B1 forms the design foundation of the Custom (B & X) Series.

Distinguished by its free and open feel, the B1 offers a natural brilliance—or “shimmer”—that defines the Schilke sound. Its lightweight construction, reverse leadpipe, and round main tuning slide contribute to an instrument that feels effortless to play, with consistent response from the lowest register to the upper extremes.

The B1 allows remarkable versatility in sound color. Players can achieve a rich, full-bodied dark tone for orchestral and chamber settings or a brilliant, ringing presence for solo, jazz, or commercial work. Superior intonation and an even, dependable feel make this model a favorite among professionals seeking flexibility without compromise.

Specifications:

  • One-piece yellow brass bell
  • #1 bell taper
  • Unsoldered bead
  • .460″ ML step bore
  • Reverse leadpipe
  • Round main tuning slide without brace
  • Lightweight design
  • 1st slide saddle & 3rd slide ring
  • Silver plated
  • Made in USA
  • Includes Bam double case and Schilke care kit

For more than six decades, the Schilke Custom Series has been trusted on stages across the globe—and the B1 continues that legacy with elegance and authority.
