Brass Instrument Acoustic Analysis
See what your instrument is really doing. Professional acoustic measurement and analysis powered by the BIAS system — the same technology used by the Institute of Music Acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
The BIAS system sends a precisely controlled signal through your instrument and measures the acoustic input impedance — the resistance the air column poses at every frequency. From this single measurement, we extract a comprehensive picture of your instrument's acoustic behavior.
Impedance Curve Analysis
Maps every resonance peak to show which notes the instrument supports and how strongly, across all valve combinations.
Intonation Analysis
Calculates the deviation of every playable note from the equally tempered scale, using weighted models that simulate how intonation shifts at different dynamics — from pianissimo through forte.
Pulse Response & Imperfection Detection
Reveals the exact location of bore constrictions, leaky valves, rough internal surfaces, and other defects — pinpointed in centimeters from the mouthpiece. Issues invisible to the eye show up here.
Pulse Reflection Factor
A single number that quantifies how well your instrument responds. Higher PRF means easier, more efficient response — closely correlated with what players describe as "how the horn feels."
Acoustic Length Measurement
Precise effective tube length for each valve combination, including the ability to calculate individual slide lengths and detect non-standard slide positions.
Printed Certificates
Professional documentation of your instrument's acoustic properties — intonation, pulse response, tuning pitch (actual and normalized to 21°C), PRF, serial number, and measurement date.
From a quick health check to full bore simulation and design consultation, we offer the right level of analysis for every need.

We Measure
Our trained operator connects the BIAS measurement head to your mouthpiece and instrument. Each valve combination takes just minutes to capture.
We Analyze
BIAS processes your data through impedance analysis, pulse response, intonation calculation, and quality metrics. We interpret the results for your specific instrument.
You Get Answers
Receive your report, certificate, and supporting data. We walk you through the findings and answer your questions.
Any brass instrument — French horns, trombones, trumpets, tubas, euphoniums, cornets, flugelhorns, and specialty or historical brass. The BIAS system supports custom instrument configurations as well.
Yes. The measurement is taken with a mouthpiece connected to the instrument, just as you would play it. We recommend bringing your own mouthpiece so the results reflect your real-world setup. We also maintain reference mouthpieces for standardized comparison if you'd like both perspectives.
Significantly. The mouthpiece cup shape and volume directly affect the Pulse Reflection Factor and weighted intonation. That's exactly why we offer mouthpiece comparison as an add-on — it quantifies what players have always felt subjectively.
Bore constrictions from dents or solder buildup, manufacturing defects, leaky or poorly seated valves, forgotten cleaning materials lodged inside the instrument, and abnormally rough internal surfaces. The system pinpoints the exact distance from the mouthpiece where each issue occurs.
Air temperature directly affects pitch — a horn measured at 16°C will show a meaningfully different tuning pitch than one measured at 23°C. We record ambient temperature before every measurement, and BIAS normalizes the tuning pitch to a standard 21°C on all certificates so measurements taken on different days remain comparable.
It complements it. BIAS measures the objective intonation the instrument offers. The played intonation depends on the musician's embouchure, air support, and playing dynamic. Our weighted analysis models simulate how different playing styles interact with the instrument's acoustics, but nothing replaces the subjective experience of playing. Think of it as an X-ray — it shows you what's inside that your ears and hands can't detect on their own.
Extremely. A pulse response scan before and after dent repair, valve rebuild, or chemical cleaning provides objective proof that the work improved the instrument. Impedance and intonation comparisons verify that a repaired instrument meets its original specifications.
