Geyer-Style Wrap with Rich Tonal Core and Precise Articulation and Projection
A Geyer-style professional model double French horn in F/Bb. The D10 Allegrini double horn is the result of a collaboration between Dürk Horns and renowned hornist & conductor Alessio Allegrini.
Note: The default finish of this instrument with Houghton Horns is unlacquered.
Playing Characteristics
The Durk D10 features a Geyer wrap and Merewether style valves, with a medium large throat bell and large 0.476 bore. Its yellow brass construction is capable of delivering a rich, complex tone with outstanding resonance and projection. Articulations are clear and easy, and the Merewether-style change-valve allows for liquid-smooth transitions between the F and Bb horn.
Alessio Allegrini is solo horn of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Additionally, he is a horn soloist and professor in the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana. Alsssio has this to say about his collaboration with Dürk Horns on the D10 Allegrini horn:
Dietmar Dürk and I have been searching for over a year for a sound that projects itself into infinity. Based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s studies into the Spiral Aurea, we developed a switching valve that rotates 120 degrees and is able to let the air flow continuously in a clockwise direction without creating turbulences.
We were looking for a rich and harmonious sound based on my experience and historical research into the true German sound. This is how we found out that in the time before Karajan it was a warm, mellow sound with sharp peaks only when necessary.
The sound of the Dürk D10 is the synthesis of a search for historical truth, but it is also the result of modern acoustic studies, based on sound projection. The Dürk D10 produces a magical sound that captivates the listener and is not localized to where it comes from. And this is the real magic that a horn must create.
The horn has a great carrying capacity; perfect intonation; and lightness in both the middle, low and high registers.
Dietmar Dürk has brilliantly understood the needs of an art that must take into account the development of the modern concert hall as well as the development of the world’s horn players.
Finally… I play Dürk because Dürk is Dürk!
Ergonomics
Focus on ergonomics results in a comfortable arrangement of the valve and thumb levers. An adjustable thumb lever and pinky ring allows players to customize the instrument to their hand size, ensuring a relaxed and stress-free hand position. Standard string linkage provides additional personal adjustment and consistent player feedback.
Special Features
Handcrafted in Germany, this custom horn stands out for its innovative design, allowing unidirectional airflow on both the Bb and F sides of the instrument—a design developed by Dick Merewether at Paxman Horns. This system ensures that the air is never obstructed by the rotors, thereby always providing a smooth playing experience. Like all Dürk horns, The D10 comes standard with an interchangeable lead pipe receiver compatible with both European and American mouthpieces. Another notable feature is an independent Bb tuning slide, which is typically not found on Geyer and/or Kruspe horns.
