The sonata was originally composed for the virtuoso horn player Giovanni Punto. Upon hearing it performed, a Hungarian critic wrote, "Who is this Beethover (sic)? His name is not known to us. Of course, Punto is very well known."
The piece was written for natural horn using the idioms of cor basse, the genre for which Punto was known. It consists of three movements:
Allegro moderato
Poco adagio, quasi andante
