Three Songs brings William Grant Still's vocal writing to the horn through arrangements by Alexa Still for horn in F and piano. Published by International Opus, this collection contains If You Should Go, Song for the Lonely, and Bayou Home.
The vocal origins suggest a natural emphasis on singing tone, breath planning, and the shape of each phrase. Without words, the hornist must communicate through timing, direction, and changes of color, while maintaining a close relationship with the piano. For teaching, that makes the collection a useful way to connect instrumental phrasing with the idea of a sung line.
The three selections can provide a contrasting group within a recital or be explored individually in lessons. This edition is specifically the horn-and-piano arrangement, catalog HN-9802. It is intended for performance with an accompanist.
