Paul Dukas's Villanelle is a substantial French concert piece for horn and piano, presented here in James Chambers's edition for International Music Company. Its pastoral character is colored by the horn's older, valve-less tradition: the opening combines ringing calls with a broad melodic line before the music turns toward faster, more agile writing.

The score explores the contrast between natural-horn colors and the flexibility of the valved instrument. Lyrical phrases give way to quick passagework, articulated figures, and changes of tone produced through hand position and stopped playing. A successful performance needs more than speed; the soloist must make these changes of character convincing while keeping the longer phrases connected.

Best approached by a player with secure technique and an established sound across registers, Villanelle offers a focused challenge in both expression and coordination. Despite the catalog title's reference to solo horn, this edition includes piano accompaniment and is not an unaccompanied work.

* Note: Houghton Horns is not in any way affiliated with the creators of this video. We included the video to give you a general taste of what the song will sound like, but the artist's interpretation of the piece may vary from your sheet music.
