The VX mouthpiece is a wonderful innovation in Houghton Horns’ acclaimed Verus product line, designed to deliver a refined playing experience for horn players of all levels. Crafted from silver-plated brass, the VX features a defined high-point rim contour that offers exceptional comfort and stability. The unique profile is elegant yet practical—shapely, balanced, and thoughtfully engineered to meet the demands of modern musicians. With a high-volume Chicago-style bowl cup, the VX produces a warm, creamy sound that is both resonant and complex. Articulation is clean, projection is strong, and tonal clarity remains consistent throughout all registers.
One-piece VX models are available in five inner diameter rim sizes: 17.25mm, 17.5mm, 17.75mm, 18mm, and 18.25mm. Choosing the correct rim size is essential for optimal performance. If you or your students play einsetzen (setting into the bottom lip), a smaller inner diameter may work well—unless the upper lip is particularly large, in which case a larger size may be needed. For those who play ansetzen (setting slightly under the bottom lip), a rim size of 17.75mm or larger is usually more comfortable. The goal is to find a diameter that suits the player’s embouchure, allowing enough lip inside the rim to vibrate and move air more effeciently. An ill-fitting rim—too small or too large—can hinder flexibility, endurance, and tone quality.
The VX is designed as a balanced mouthpiece that is accessible to all players with a medium cup depth, medium rim width, and a #14 bore for consistent response. Its standard Morse taper shank and medium backbore ensure reliable fit and airflow. We are thrilled to offer this exceptional mouthpiece in a variety of sizes, helping horn players everywhere find their perfect fit. We also strongly recommend that school programs and horn instructors purchase a Teacher’s Set so they can allow students to test the mouthpieces to determine what size is best for them. These sets can be customized.
