Program Notes:

Throughout ancient times, horns and trumpets were used as signals, and for worship, and to symbolize power and victory. The Lord is My Rock utilizes open chords and parallel fifth intervals to make the piece sound medieval, and some sections are reminiscent of a fanfare. Psalm 144 states: "Praise be to the Lord my Lord my Rock...He is my loving God and my fortress, my Stronghold and my Deliverer, my Shield, in whom I take refuge...". In this piece, my intention was to portray some of the attributes of the Lord God.

Awhile back, I was warming up on my French horn, and improvising melodies. I really liked the sound of this solo horn melody I played, so I built this piece around that melody, as notated in the beginning of the second movement.

Special thanks to Mark S., Asher T., and Mathew F. for their editing help.
