About Greg Black Mouthpieces

Greg Black has been making mouthpieces since 1985, carrying on the traditions of the great New York City mouthpiece makers. Today he and partner Benjamin Strickland run the shop in Mount Holly, North Carolina, where every mouthpiece is handmade. You'll find Greg Black mouthpieces in orchestras, Broadway pits, recording studios, and schools around the world.

The Symphony Series

The Symphony series is Greg Black's large shank tenor trombone line, built around a medium wide rim and a .281" bore. Each rim size comes in several cup depths, from GS (medium) to G (deep), so you can keep the rim you like and just change the depth. The naming works like most other brands: the smaller the number, the bigger the mouthpiece, with the 5G and 4.5G being the most common sizes. Greg's standard G cup is U shaped, with an open feel and a big sound.

5G-4G Specs

  • Cup diameter: 25.8mm (1.016")
  • Cup depth: Deep, with the U shaped G cup
  • Rim width: Medium wide
  • Bore options: Choose the standard 'K' (.281") or a .277" bore with a #1 backbore.
  • Shank: Large (symphony tenor)
  • Weight options: Light, Regular, Medium, or Heavy. Heavier mouthpieces slot more firmly, while lighter ones give you more flexibility in slotting and dynamic control. Light is a great all-around choice, and heavier weights tend to be preferred for orchestral work or the extremes of very soft and very loud playing.
