About Greg Black Mouthpieces

Greg Black has been making mouthpieces since 1985, carrying on the traditions of the great New York City mouthpiece makers. Today he and partner Benjamin Strickland run the shop in Mount Holly, North Carolina, where every mouthpiece is handmade. You'll find Greg Black mouthpieces in orchestras, Broadway pits, recording studios, and schools around the world.

New York Alto and Small Bore

These New York models use a medium shallow, C style cup for alto trombone or small bore tenor. Each rim matches a New York symphony tenor size, so players who double can keep the same feel across instruments.

New York 3A Specs

  • Cup diameter: 25.95mm (1.022")
  • Cup depth: Medium shallow (C cup style)
  • Rim: Matches the New York 5 symphony tenor rim
  • Bore: 'A' (.234")
  • Shank: Small (alto and small bore tenor)
  • Weight: Regular. Heavier mouthpieces slot more firmly, while lighter ones give you more flexibility in slotting and dynamic control. Light is a great all-around choice, and heavier weights tend to be preferred for orchestral work or the extremes of very soft and very loud playing.

Not sure which size is right for you? Schedule an in-person or Zoom mouthpiece consultation with us. We can also special order any Greg Black mouthpiece you don't see on our website.
