About Greg Black Mouthpieces
Greg Black has been making mouthpieces since 1985, carrying on the traditions of the great New York City mouthpiece makers. Today he and partner Benjamin Strickland run the shop in Mount Holly, North Carolina, where every mouthpiece is handmade. You'll find Greg Black mouthpieces in orchestras, Broadway pits, recording studios, and schools around the world.
The "W" Symphony Series
The "W" series grew out of player requests for a cup slightly deeper than the standard GS but not as deep as the GSD. Greg paired that cup with a custom backbore, so you get a big, rich sound without giving up clarity or high range.
4.5GSW Specs
- Cup diameter: 25.95mm (1.022")
- Cup depth: Between the GS and GSD
- Rim width: Medium wide
- Bore: 'K' (.281") with Greg's custom W backbore
- Shank: Large (symphony tenor), one piece
- Weight options: Light or Regular. Heavier mouthpieces slot more firmly, while lighter ones give you more flexibility in slotting and dynamic control. Light is a great all-around choice, and heavier weights tend to be preferred for orchestral work or the extremes of very soft and very loud playing.
Not sure which size is right for you? Schedule an in-person or Zoom mouthpiece consultation with us. We can also special order any Greg Black mouthpiece you don't see on our website.
