Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat Major pairs expansive, singing lines with nimble, conversational writing. Composed in 1942, nearly sixty years after his first horn concerto, it was premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg with the Vienna Philharmonic under Karl Böhm. The manuscript's dedication recalls Strauss's father, the horn player Franz Strauss.

The three movements move from the opening Allegro's declamatory gestures and flowing melody into an Andante con moto, followed by a lively Rondo. The music asks the soloist to change character readily: sustained lyricism gives way to quick figures, rhythmic precision, and a buoyant sense of dialogue. Those contrasts make it a substantial project for advanced players, with musical flexibility as important as technical security.

This Boosey & Hawkes edition provides the horn part with Harold Perry's piano reduction, suitable for lessons, recital preparation, and performance with pianist. It is not the orchestral score or a set of orchestral parts.
