Just Desserts: Frippery Style brings Lowell E. Shaw's lighter, jazz-influenced approach to a single horn. The collection offers unaccompanied pieces for horn in F and an alternative to conventional technical studies when a player wants to concentrate on rhythmic personality and musical delivery.
Shaw's Frippery writing grew from his interest in teaching horn players the unequal eighth notes and offbeat emphasis of swing. In a solo setting, there is no partner to establish that feel: pacing, articulation, and the shape of each phrase must come from the player. The pieces can therefore be used to explore how a written line gains character through timing rather than simply through speed or volume.
Published by The Hornists' Nest as HN81, this is the solo-horn book. The publisher also offers optional bass parts separately; they are not needed to use the collection as unaccompanied horn music and are not included in this listing.
