Catherine Likhuta's Special Someone is a short, jazz-influenced duet, presented here in the composer's version for two horns. At approximately two minutes, it offers a compact chamber selection for a horn recital, studio event, or program needing a brief change of character without piano accompaniment.

Written in 2020, the piece was commissioned by Liz Deitemyer as a gift for her partner, Parker Nelson. Its original instrumentation was horn and bassoon, and members of the Fifth House Ensemble premiered that version at the virtual Fresh Inc Festival on June 17, 2020. Likhuta subsequently made the work available in several instrumental combinations, including this two-horn setting.

The personal origin and jazzy character distinguish the work from a conventional technical duet. For two horn players, it provides an opportunity to bring that character into a small-scale performance in which both musicians shape the result.

The video below features the original horn-and-bassoon version; this product is the version for two horns.
