The LDx5 came into being through the collaboration of two experts in their fields – Master Craftsman Steven W. Lewis and Dietmar Dürk. Masterful workmanship, in combination with the best of materials and years of experience, has brought fantastic results. The horn is traditional in design, but the concept behind its construction is an innovative one. The tools and production techniques were developed in-house and specifically for this project, supporting traditional handicraft and assuring the quality, consistent standard and series identity of each individual horn. The gentle, careful handling of materials during construction insures a minimum of material stress, resulting in a horn that speaks freely, responds quickly, and resonates with an open and clear sound from the very first note.

The “Rhenish” variant, exclusive to Houghton Horns, features a modified bracing concept in which the leadpipe and F branch are attached via a continuous bead of solder rather than traditional braces. Careful handling of materials during construction reduces material stress, resulting in a horn that vibrates more freely, responds quicker, and resonates with an richer, more complex sound than the standard LDx5.
Playing Characteristics
The LDx5 “Rhenish” offers a clear, focused sound with excellent projection and carrying power in the concert hall. Response is firm and predictable throughout the range, with a centered timbre in all registers and strong slotting without feeling restrictive. The horn speaks easily at soft dynamics while maintaining breadth and stability at louder volumes.
Tonally, the LDx5 represents the best of both worlds, blending the richness often associated with American-style playing with the clarity and focus characteristic of European designs.
