Customers who purchase a new Shires custom tenor trombone will receive their choice of one sterling silver leadpipe or three leadpipes in yellow brass, gold brass, or nickel silver included in their purchase. You don't need to purchase them separately.
Refine your Shires tenor trombone's response with a leadpipe matched to your handslide and playing preferences. Venturi size, material, and length each influence the instrument's feel, articulation, and tonal character.
Bore and mouthpiece compatibility:
- Unmarked bore prefix: For .547-inch-bore handslides and large-shank mouthpieces.
- For dual-bore handslides, match the leadpipe to the smaller bore of the upper tube.
- M and MT leadpipes are for .525-inch-bore handslides and are separate configurations.
Venturi:
The central number identifies the relative size of the venturi, the narrowest point in the leadpipe.
- 1: Small venturi; centered sound and clearly defined articulation.
- 1.5: Medium-small venturi; combines characteristics of the small and medium sizes.
- 2: Medium venturi; open sound.
- 2.5: Medium-large venturi; a more open response.
- 3: Largest venturi; broad, expansive sound.
Material:
- Unmarked, yellow brass: Balances warmth and brilliance with a clear, articulate response.
- N, nickel silver: Emphasizes brilliance, clarity, and crisp articulation, potentially reducing tonal flexibility.
- G, gold brass: Emphasizes warmth and density with rounded articulation, potentially reducing clarity.
- SS, sterling silver: Emphasizes the fundamental and presence, with a clear attack and simpler overtone character; may offer less warmth and brilliance.
Length:
- Unmarked, standard: 8.75 inches for brass and nickel-silver .547-inch tenor leadpipes; 9.75 inches for sterling silver.
- L, long: 9.75 inches, with a more centered sound and feel. Sterling-silver pipes are already this length as standard and do not have a separate long version.
- S, short: 8 inches for brass and nickel silver; 8.75 inches for sterling silver. Offers a more open sound and feel.
