Designed as a lightweight, four-valve single Bb horn, the fourth valve traditionally serves as a stopping valve, lowering the pitch by a semitone for stopped passages. This instrument includes an F extension slide that can be installed in place of the standard stopping valve slide. When fitted, the fourth valve operates the F extension, providing access to the lower register and many of the fingerings found on a standard double horn while retaining the lighter weight and response of a single Bb horn.
Like many Alexander horns, the Model 90 produces a rich, colorful sound with a clear core and quick response. Its lighter weight compared to a double horn makes it comfortable to hold for extended playing, while the single Bb design offers the secure slotting and responsive feel that many players appreciate, particularly in the upper register.
