Reinhold Gliere's Concerto in B-flat Major, Op. 91 gives the horn an expansive Romantic voice, combining broad melodies with brilliant solo writing. This International Music Company edition presents the concerto with piano accompaniment and cadenzas, edited by Valery Polekh, the hornist closely associated with the work's creation.

The three movements offer a substantial range of character. A vigorous Allegro establishes the concerto's scale, the Andante places the emphasis on sustained lyricism, and the finale moves from a moderate introduction into an energetic Allegro vivace. For the soloist, the challenge is to sustain a generous tone and a clear musical direction through both long phrases and more demanding passages.

This is repertoire for a player with secure range, endurance, and technical control, rather than a short introductory solo. The piano reduction is useful for recital performance and detailed preparation with an accompanist, while preserving the solo part's concerto-length demands.

Here is a performance of the piece by full orchestra, as opposed to the piano reduction offered in this book.
