A Geyer-style professional model double French horn in F/Bb.
The Legacy is the first traditionally wrapped Geyer-style horn from Finke. It sports a medium yellow brass bell, corrosion-resistant gold brass lead-pipe, and combines the best features of the original Geyer instruments: warm, colorful sound, even timbre throughout the registers, smooth slurs, and an open feel.

Finke’s composite rotors make pesky technical passages fun and easy. They also lighten the entire instrument, and significantly improve overall efficiency and response.
German Engineering
All Finke Horns are manufactured and assembled to exact specifications on-site at the Finke workshop in Vlotho, Germany. Founded by Helmut Finke in the 1950s, the company has a rich tradition of manufacturing excellence.
Features
The Finke Legacy is a handmade German double horn in F/Bb designed in the tradition of Carl Geyer instruments. It features a 120-degree valve configuration with a parallel main and F tuning slide layout, characteristic of classic Geyer-style design. Reduced bracing and the soldering of critical F pipe bends create a more unified resonating system, significantly enhancing response and overtone development. The horn is equipped with lightning-fast composite rotors and a mechanical linkage system, providing exceptionally smooth, quiet, and reliable valve action. Built using in-house–manufactured components, the Legacy reflects Finke’s commitment to precision, consistency, and long-term durability, and is available with multiple taper options to suit different playing styles.
Technical Details
-
Weight: 5.29 lbs (2400 g)
-
Bore: 12.1 mm
-
Bell diameter: 12.2 inch (310 mm)
Playing Characteristics
The Finke Legacy offers a remarkably cohesive playing experience, responding as if “cut from a single block.” Versus using standard braces to connect the Horn body and F branch, the Legacy is soldered into one unified piece, a carefully hand-made construction that allows the instrument to vibrate freely, expanding the overtone spectrum while maintaining a clear, centered core. Response is immediate and consistent throughout the range, with excellent intonation and stability even at high dynamic levels.
The horn provides a wide dynamic range and strong projection, while remaining flexible enough for refined color shaping. Its balance of power, clarity, and ease of response makes it well suited for demanding orchestral work as well as solo performance.
Taper Options
The Finke Legacy is available with several taper options to match different tonal preferences and performance requirements. The most popular Medium taper is offered at Houghton Horns.
-
Medium Taper
The standard taper for Finke B-horns, offering excellent intonation and a warm, direct sound. Ideal for solo and orchestral use, it delivers a full fortissimo without harshness and maintains a refined balance between response and power. -
Medium-Wide Taper
Produces a larger tonal volume with outstanding carrying capacity in the concert hall. This taper remains stable in pitch and offers the dynamic range expected of a modern orchestral horn. -
Wide Taper
A distinctive option that delivers a broad, powerful sound while remaining remarkably easy to play. This taper combines width and projection with exceptional accuracy and clarity, allowing the tone to carry effortlessly in large concert halls.
About Finke Horns
Finke Horns was founded by Helmut Finke, whose background as both a mechanical engineer and professional musician shaped the company’s commitment to precision and acoustical excellence. Since the early 1950s, Finke has focused on building high-quality brass instruments, later specializing in French horns and working closely with the Physical Technical Institute in Braunschweig to refine response, intonation, and tonal balance.
A defining feature of Finke Horns is the decision to manufacture all major components in-house. Bells, valves, and crooks are produced within the workshop, allowing for exceptional quality control and continuous development—an approach followed by only a small number of makers worldwide.
Today, the family-run company is led by Johannes Finke and his wife, Argentine hornist Mariela Rodriguez Finke. Together with a highly trained team, they continue more than 70 years of tradition, producing instruments that preserve the classic German Waldhorn sound while meeting the demands of modern players. The Finke Europa reflects this legacy through its balance of craftsmanship, performance, and value.
