Thein Brass handcrafts trumpets, trombones, and other brass instruments in Bremen, Germany. Most models are offered with a wide range of bells, leadpipes, metals, and finishes, so players can tailor the instrument to their sound.
Thein developed its Universal bass trombone with Zachary Bond of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, working on it together since 2010. The goal was to combine the Thein sound with the easy playability of an American-style bass trombone. This is the in-line Universal in Thein's 007 Personal configuration.
It has two in-line Hagmann valves with acorns on the valve slides, a 9-1/2" bell with a cut bell and changeable bell system, and a .567" yellow brass handslide with nickel silver tubes. The reversed tuning slide carries an acorn and Thein's Belcanto balancer, and a hand support is included. This example has a few minor scratches on the bell from being shown by Thein at a trade show, and is otherwise brand new. Thein recommends its BM-W mouthpiece. See the Thein mouthpiece guide for the full lineup.
