Introducing the Yamaha YHR-872ND, a Custom horn designed for professional and aspiring players ready to elevate their performance. This innovative instrument features a rich, colorful tonal palette inspired by iconic vintage horns, combined with Yamaha’s renowned reliable intonation. Whether on stage or in the studio, the YHR-872ND delivers the bold sound you’ve been dreaming of.

Nickel silver body
The YHR-872ND body is made of nickel silver.
Nickel silver is resistant to corrosion, harder than yellow brass, and capable of delivering rich, colorful tone with outstanding playing response. The instrument responds directly to every playing nuance for vibrant, unrestricted expression.
The tuning slide outer and inner tubes are made of nickel silver that has a different composition than the nickel silver used in the bell and main body. The material used in the tuning slides includes a higher percentage of hard, durable metal for improved response.

Extra-large bell, Lightweight bell flare, Unsoldered bell rim
The YHR-872ND features an extra-large bell that delivers a rich, warm tone. The unsoldered bell rim adds resonance, a more open playing feel and powerful projection.
The YHR-872ND additionally features a lightweight bell flare that contributes to improved response and more nuanced tonal control.

One-piece machined mouthpiece receiver
The mouthpiece receiver on the YHR-872ND features an entirely new design.
Compared to conventional two-piece mouthpiece receivers that are made up of a separate mouthpipe and reinforcing tube, the one-piece machined YHR-872ND mouthpiece receiver achieves better sound transmission for significantly enhanced response.

Leadpipe
The leadpipe of the acclaimed Yamaha YHR-862 Custom Horn, widely considered to be a masterpiece in horn design, was used as the basis for the YHR-872ND leadpipe’s refined design, taking the relative positions of the left hand and mouthpiece into account. The result is a horn that offers more comfortable playability in all playing positions, even when the bell is rested on the player’s leg.

Square main and F tuning slide crooks
The YHR-872ND uses square tubing in the crook for optimum playing resistance.
Where the YHR-672 uses a single brace in the F tube, the YHR-872ND adds a second brace that enhances response for advanced players. The dual brace design helps to keep the tone rich and powerful even when the instrument is played hard.
Optimum playing feel has been achieved by making the main tuning slide bore slightly larger (12.1 mm dia.) than the other slides (12.0 mm dia.).

Rotary valve caps
The rotary valve caps feature an attractive engraved design that adds to the instrument’s sophisticated, high-quality look and feel.
The rear surface of the rotary valve caps has a ring-shaped protrusion that enhances the sound transmission for more free playability.

Phosphor bronze valve inner caps
The rotary valves at the heart of the horn feature phosphor bronze inner caps for enhanced durability. The valve rotors are made of brass.

Adjustable short-stroke 4th lever, Adjustable finger hook
YHR-872ND features an adjustable short-stroke 4th lever. Smooth switching between the F and Bb sides allows the player to focus more fully on the performance.
As in other custom models, an adjustable finger hook can be set up for optimum playing comfort and control.

Development Artist - Mark Almond
"I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Yamaha designers during my time in San Francisco to help develop the new 872 horn. As you would expect from Yamaha, the build quality, intonation, projection and consistency between individual instruments is top notch. The 872 has a wonderful core to the sound and an ease of playability across the registers; it truly brings the old Kruspe style horns into the 21st century." - Dr Mark Almond, Principal Horn, Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Profile: Mark Almond is the principal horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was formerly associate principal of the San Francisco Symphony, principal of the San Francisco Opera orchestra and third horn of the Philharmonia Orchestra, London. He has played guest principal with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras amongst others and can be heard on numerous movie soundtracks. He is professor of horn at Roosevelt University, Chicago and visiting professor of horn at the Royal Academy of Music London. Prior to moving to the United States Mark worked as a hospital physician specializing in pulmonology and he holds a PhD in immunology/virology.
